Kaikōura community initiatives receive $54,471 in 2020/21
In the last year 26 community projects have been supported through grants administered by Kaikōura District Council, totaling almost $55,000. The Council also contributes to Sports Tasman, Destination Kaikōura, iSite and the Kaikōura Museum.
Community Services Manager, Susi Haberstock said “It’s great to see the range of different projects that have received funding, from art classes and sports equipment through to the development of a marine mammal ap. These initiatives highlight the skill and energy within our community.”
The Creative Communities Scheme funded by Creative New Zealand totaled $22,000 and supported 48 Hours in Kaikōura (photo exhibition), art classes for adults and tamariki, the Kaikōura Arts Trail website (promoting artists in the district) and Zoetrope drawing classes in schools. Two recent rounds have approved funds for two murals, an art book, an exhibition and the Kaikōura Talent Quest – time to start practicing your moves! The Kaikōura Children’s Choir, Inspiration Container Lego exhibition and Re(start) Art workshops also received funding.
The Council’s $15,000 Community Initiative Fund supported a magician’s performance in the Kaikōura Hospital Rest Home, a summer holiday reading programme, the Great Kaikōura Whale Count and Tinkertime (a monthly activity programme for over 65’s). A second round in April approved the development of a range of Maori resources to be utilised across a range of projects including performance, and the development of a marine mammal app which will enable real time collection of marine mammal sightings in Kaikōura.
$13,380 from the Sports NZ Rural Travel Fund was used to help Kaikōura High School Hockey, Kaikōura Netball Centre and Kaikōura Rugby travel to local sporting competitions.
The George Low Trust Fund has been running for over 40 years, this fund allows for the provision of recreational equipment for the youth of Kaikōura. The Kaikōura High School were successful in their application to purchase hockey equipment, and the Aquatic Centre can now purchase learn to swim equipment. The Kaikōura Netball Centre will continue their successful junior umpire programme, and Kororā has funds to buy sports equipment and board games for their school holiday programme.
The Council would like to acknowledge all the volunteers who sit on the community grant boards and go through the applications.

The Creative Communities Scheme Fund closing dates for the remaining two rounds for 2021-2022 are 24 January 2022 at 4pm and 4 April 2022 at 4pm (the last for the year). more info can be found here
