Update on the Go Cart Track at Kowhai River Kaikoura

Kaikōura District Council (KDC), in discussion with a number of parties over the last several weeks, has taken the step to physically prevent access to the drift track via the KDC managed land adjacent to the track. This temporary response is as a direct result of escalating events over the last few weeks which has seen extreme antisocial behaviour at the track resulting in safety, environmental and social concerns. The local drift club have acknowledged that, despite efforts, events have got out of hand at the location.

Council is keen to discuss any potential longer term solution for the area and will establishing a working group to determine the options. In the meantime, we have requested support from the local drift club to help communicate that the track is currently closed for use by any party. We have the backing for this closure from a number of agencies and will be looking to jointly enforce any continued anti-social behaviour in the area. Access to the river is still available via the other side of the road bridge.
