Planned work on the State Highway 2021 and 2022
Downers have provided an overview of planned maintenance work that will be happening in the Kaikōura district on behalf of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency over the next nine months. This list excludes any work that must be done following recent weather events, and any work on the highway that may be a special project.

Types of work and what communication residents can expect:
Watercutting – done in winter this removes the “shiny” bits from the road surface, making it less slippery. Done at night, constantly moving. Annoying when it comes past your house, but it moves on quickly. Downer cover hundreds of km and can’t let everyone know, but we do check the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency database and write to people who have contacted them before.
RRPM – what we would call a Cat’s eye. These get removed for all sorts of reasons including by the snow plough, or to work on the highway. Downer try not to replace these only to dig them up again – so you’ll see us doing this throughout the year. Minimally disruptive and we don’t let people know.
Asphalt – mostly found in the city and on twisty bits of highway, Downer do this over the warmer months. Mostly done at night. Noisy – but usually only for a couple of nights. Downer will put up a VMS board a week ahead to let people know, and write to people who live right by the worksite. Downer provide a direct dial phone number for most sites and a 24/7 0800 number for the others. On narrow rural sections of highway Downer sometimes need to close the highway for a time. Downer will give good notice of this.
Chip seal – also done during the warmer months, Downer repair the highway one year and do the chip seal the next. The list below is just the sealing. Usually done during the day in rural areas and at night in towns and cities. Downer don’t write to everyone about this unless it’s in populated areas at night.
AWT – Area wide treatment. What you think of, when you hear the words “road works”. Lots of digging, and compacting and then resealing – this work lasts a few weeks and is noisy and dusty. Downer make the most effort to let people know about these as they are the most disruptive. Downer will probably visit local businesses, write to people who live nearby and put up VMS boards with a contact phone number. However each one is treated differently depending on location and extent of the work.
Bridge – each bridge repair is completely different and Downer will look carefully at the location before deciding how to carry out the work and how to tell people about it.
