Reserve Management Plans
What is a Reserve Management Plan?
A Reserve Management Plan is a document required under the Reserves Act 1977. Under Section 41 of the Reserves Act, it is required that the administering body shall give public notice that the process is underway, and to request members of the public to provide suggestions on the proposed plan.
The aim of the reserve management plan is to provide for and ensure the use, enjoyment, maintenance, protection, and preservation as the case may require, and, to the extent that the administering body’s resources permit, the development as appropriate, of the reserve for the purposes for which is classified, and shall incorporate and ensure compliance with the principles set out in section 17 (Recreation reserves), section 18 (Historic reserves), section 19 (Scenic reserves), section 20 (Nature reserves), section 21 (Scientific reserves), section 22 (Government purpose reserves), or section 23 (Local purpose reserves), as the case may be, for a reserve of that classification.
Reserve Management Plans shall be reviewed regularly and follow the same method of public consultation.
Kaikōura District is home to approximately 114 Reserves, mostly listed as scenic/recreation or Ngai Tahu reserves. Council is seeking to write reserve management plans to ensure that Kaikōura aligns with the requirements set out in the Reserves Act.
